Draw Near to God
James 4:7–10
“Draw near to God and He will draw near to you.”

James’s invitation to draw near is surrounded by commands: submit, resist, cleanse, purify, lament, and humble yourself. Nearness is grace, but never casual indifference toward sin.
God is already present everywhere. Drawing near does not persuade a distant deity to approach; it describes restored fellowship as the divided heart turns toward the One it has resisted.
Submission comes first. We cannot seek intimacy with God while reserving the throne. Nearness grows where self-rule yields to His good authority.
Resistance to the devil is active loyalty. Temptation loses ground as we stand beneath God’s truth, refuse accusation and deceit, and choose obedience in the particular place of conflict.
Clean hands name outward practice; purified hearts name inward allegiance. God addresses the whole person, joining repentance of actions with surrender of hidden desire.
James calls for grief because sin is not merely a technical defect; it wounds fellowship with God and neighbor. Grace teaches us to mourn without collapsing into hopeless shame.
The promise is astonishing: He will draw near to you. The holy God welcomes the humbled sinner because Christ has opened the living way into His presence.
Come without disguise. Name what must be surrendered, receive cleansing, and let God lift you in His time. The deepest movement toward Him is already answered by mercy moving toward you.

Tozer used the image of a veil to describe inward barriers that obscure conscious communion with the God who is already present. The obstacle is not divine reluctance but the unsurrendered self.
James gives this longing the shape of repentance. Nearness is not pursued through technique; it is received as proud resistance yields to God’s grace and truth.
A Prayer
Holy God,
Near and holy God, I submit again to Your rightful rule.
Expose divided desire, cleanse my actions, and teach me to resist every lie that draws me from You. Give me grief that leads to repentance rather than despair.
Thank You that Christ has opened the way. Draw near as I come without disguise, and lift me according to Your mercy. Amen.
