Morning by Morning
Isaiah 50:4–5
“He awakens Me morning by morning, He awakens My ear to hear as the learned.”

Isaiah’s Servant receives before He speaks. The tongue that sustains the weary is formed by an ear awakened morning after morning to hear God.
This rhythm begins with divine initiative: ‘He awakens.’ Attention is not a spiritual achievement by which we make God speak; it is grace by which the speaking God makes us ready to listen.
Morning by morning suggests patient formation. One dramatic insight cannot replace a life of repeated listening. God shapes His servants through daily truth received and obeyed.
The learned tongue is not merely eloquent. It knows how to speak a word in season to the weary—truth fitted by compassion to the person and moment before us.
Listening precedes usefulness. When we rush toward ministry without receiving from God, we offer others the noise of our anxiety or the thin supply of yesterday’s attention.
The Servant is not rebellious and does not turn away. Hearing reaches completion in obedience, even as the following verses lead toward costly suffering.
Jesus perfectly embodies this listening life. He speaks what He receives from the Father, welcomes the weary, and remains obedient through rejection and the cross.
Let the morning become an offered threshold rather than a hurried possession. Ask God to awaken your ear, form your speech, and give you one faithful word for someone tired along the way.

Tozer emphasized that God is not silent, though our noise and inattention often make us poor hearers. His living voice addresses us supremely through the written Word and the Son to whom it bears witness.
Isaiah guards listening from self-invention. The awakened ear receives from God so that the disciplined tongue may serve the weary in obedient love.
A Prayer
Holy God,
God who speaks, awaken my ear morning by morning and quiet every rival voice.
Form in me a listening life—not curiosity without obedience, but attention ready to follow Your will.
Give me words seasoned by truth and compassion, able to sustain the weary and honor Jesus, Your faithful Servant. Amen.
