Fullness of Joy
Psalm 16
“In Your presence is fullness of joy; at Your right hand are pleasures forevermore.”

Psalm 16 begins with refuge and ends with joy. David’s gladness grows not from insulated circumstances but from taking shelter in the God he names as Lord.
‘You are my Lord; I have no good apart from You.’ Every created good finds its source and proper place in God. Gifts become destructive only when asked to replace the Giver.
David refuses the sorrow-multiplying pursuit of rival gods. Idolatry promises enlarged life but fractures desire and increases grief.
The Lord Himself is David’s portion and cup. Before he considers the shape of his inheritance, he receives God as the deepest inheritance.
He blesses the Lord who counsels him and sets the Lord continually before him. Joy is strengthened by deliberate remembrance—returning the mind to God’s character throughout the day.
Because God is at his right hand, David’s heart is glad and even his body rests secure. Divine presence embraces the whole person, including our mortal vulnerability.
The psalm reaches beyond David to Jesus, the Holy One whom death could not hold. Resurrection confirms that the path of life truly leads through death into unending pleasure with God.
Do not demand joy from what cannot bear its weight. Set the risen Christ before you, receive God as your portion, and let every lesser delight become a window toward the fullness found in His presence.

Tozer described faith as the soul’s sustained gaze upon God—attention repeatedly turned from self toward the trustworthy One.
Psalm 16 shows the fruit of that gaze: stability, counsel, embodied hope, and joy. Christian readers receive its promise most fully in the resurrection of Jesus.
A Prayer
Holy God,
God my portion, free me from asking created gifts to become the source of my life.
Set my attention upon the risen Christ. Counsel me, steady me, and teach my whole person to rest securely in Your care.
Lead me in the path of life until faith becomes sight and joy is full in Your presence. Amen.
