Awake, My Soul
Psalm 57:7–11
“Awake, my glory! Awake, lute and harp! I will awaken the dawn.”

David sings from a cave. Danger has not disappeared, yet his heart has found a fixed point: ‘My heart is steadfast, O God.’ Praise awakens before circumstances change.
He speaks to his own glory—his whole God-given capacity for worship—and summons instruments and dawn itself. The soul does not wait passively for desire; it turns deliberately toward the Lord.
Spiritual sleep can settle over us through discouragement, distraction, or familiarity. We continue religious habits while wonder, gratitude, and expectancy grow quiet.
David awakens because God’s mercy reaches to the heavens and His truth to the clouds. Praise is not self-generated optimism; it answers the immeasurable character of God.
‘Be exalted above the heavens’ restores the right order. The worshiper does not make God greater but allows God’s greatness to displace the cramped authority of fear and self-concern.
Morning praise does not deny the cave. It declares that darkness does not possess the final word and that God’s glory will cover the earth beyond the present enclosure.
Christ rose at dawn, turning the morning into a lasting sign that death has been overtaken by life. Our praise joins the resurrection future even while we wait.
Awaken what has grown drowsy. Name God’s mercy and truth aloud, offer Him the first attention of the day, and let worship re-center the life He gave you.
In Conversation with A. W. Tozer
Tozer urged believers to restore the Creator-creature relation by placing God again at the center of thought, desire, and worship. Disorder begins when the self occupies the place that belongs to Him.
Psalm 57 performs that restoration. In the cave, David exalts God above the heavens, and the soul awakens as it returns to its truthful place beneath divine mercy.
A Prayer
Holy God,
God of mercy and truth, awaken my soul from distracted and discouraged sleep.
Take the first place in my thoughts and loves. Let Your greatness become more commanding than the cave around me.
Because Christ rose with life beyond death, teach me to awaken the dawn with praise until Your glory fills the earth. Amen.
