The Fragrance of Devotion
John 12:1–8
“Then Mary took a pound of very costly oil of spikenard, anointed the feet of Jesus… And the house was filled with the fragrance.”

Six days before Passover, a meal is prepared for Jesus in Bethany. Lazarus, once dead, sits at the table—a living sign that the One approaching His own death is the resurrection and the life.
Mary brings costly perfume, pours it upon Jesus’ feet, and wipes them with her hair. Her devotion is humble, public, and extravagant.
The house fills with fragrance. Love offered directly to Christ reaches beyond the worshiper, shaping an atmosphere others cannot help but encounter.
Judas calculates the price and disguises greed as concern for the poor. Religious language can hide a heart that values usefulness, money, or appearance above Jesus Himself.
Christ’s defense of Mary does not diminish care for the poor. He exposes Judas and recognizes that this singular act prepares His body for burial.
Mary may understand only partly, yet her love is fitting to the hour. Devotion sometimes perceives the worth of Jesus before it can explain the whole meaning of its response.
Worship is not waste when Christ is its object. Still, this passage does not authorize neglect of neighbor; the same Jesus receives love expressed both at His feet and toward the vulnerable.
Bring Him what calculation keeps withholding—attention, honor, repentance, time, treasure, or affection. Let love become concrete enough to fill the house.

Tozer warned that even good gifts can crowd the inner sanctuary when they become more precious than God. Holy desire releases its possessive grip so Christ may be treasured first.
Mary’s act gives that surrender a Gospel center. Her costly gift honors Jesus on the threshold of the cross, where His own self-giving love will exceed every offering we bring.
A Prayer
Holy God,
Lord Jesus, You are worthy of love that is humble, wholehearted, and concrete.
Expose the calculations and hidden motives that keep me from honoring You. Teach me devotion that never uses worship to excuse neglect of others.
Receive what I have guarded too closely, and let love for You carry the fragrance of grace into the lives around me. Amen.
