The Beauty of Holiness

Psalm 29

“Worship the Lord in the beauty of holiness.”
Psalm 29 (NKJV)

Psalm 29 calls heavenly beings to give the Lord the glory due His name. Worship does not add greatness to God; it acknowledges the weight that has always belonged to Him.

The beauty of holiness joins two realities we sometimes separate. God’s moral perfection is not sterile severity. Everything in Him is radiant, harmonious, and worthy of desire.

The voice of the Lord moves across the waters and breaks the cedars. The storm that makes creation tremble is governed by a word more powerful than nature itself.

Human strength appears fragile beneath that voice. The cedars of Lebanon—symbols of grandeur and permanence—splinter before the sovereign Creator.

Lightning flashes, wilderness shakes, and forests are stripped bare. In His temple, everyone cries, ‘Glory!’ Awe is the fitting recognition that reality is filled with the majesty of God.

Yet the Lord is not swept along by the flood. He sits enthroned as King forever, possessing unthreatened authority over every force that frightens us.

The psalm ends unexpectedly with grace: this mighty Lord gives strength to His people and blesses them with peace. Holy power is not hostile to those sheltered in His covenant mercy.

Let reverence and confidence meet. Bow before the beauty that exposes every false glory, then rise strengthened by the King whose thunder ends in peace for His people.

Tozer spoke of holiness as the incomprehensible purity and moral perfection of God, before which creatures respond with reverence and wonder.

Psalm 29 prevents holiness from becoming abstraction. The Holy One speaks with creation-shaking authority, reigns above the flood, and gives strength and peace to His people.

A Prayer

Holy God,

Holy Lord, receive the glory due Your name and correct every casual thought I hold about You.

Let Your voice break my pride, strip away false security, and awaken reverent wonder at Your beauty.

King forever, give strength to Your people and bless us with the peace secured in Christ. Amen.
