Open My Eyes

The psalmist possesses God’s law and still asks for opened eyes. Scripture may be physically before us while wonder remains unseen; revelation requires receptive sight.

The prayer is not for novelty hidden from ordinary believers. It asks the Giver of the Word to unveil the beauty, coherence, and claim already present in what He has spoken.

We are strangers on earth, and therefore need God’s commandments. The world offers many maps for success, but only the Creator’s Word shows what human life is for and where it is going.

Longing fills the passage. The psalmist’s soul breaks with desire for God’s judgments. Appetite grows through attention: what begins as discipline may deepen into hunger as Scripture reveals the character of God.

There is also opposition. Proud voices mock the faithful reader, and powerful people speak against him. Yet he meditates because God’s testimonies provide counsel more trustworthy than the surrounding court.

Opened eyes involve more than intellect. We read with the mind, depend upon the Spirit, bring the conscience into the light, and remain willing to obey what we see.

Christ opens Scripture around Himself. The commandments lead us toward the faithful Son who fulfilled them, bore their judgment for us, and writes God’s will upon renewed hearts.

Before reading, pause and ask for sight. Do not hurry merely to complete a portion. Look for the wonder of God, and stay long enough for His Word to look back at you.
