Give Thanks in Everything
1 Thessalonians 5:16–18
“In everything give thanks; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.”

Paul places three brief commands together: rejoice always, pray without ceasing, and give thanks in everything. Together they describe a life continually turned toward God.
Thanksgiving ‘in everything’ does not call evil good or require gratitude for cruelty, grief, or injustice. Scripture gives us lament precisely because pain may be named truthfully before God.
We give thanks within every circumstance because no circumstance can remove the Father’s faithfulness, cancel the cross, dethrone the risen Christ, or silence the Spirit’s intercession.
Gratitude is therefore an act of attention. It notices mercies that anxiety, entitlement, and hurry train us to overlook.
Thanksgiving also remembers dependence. Every breath, meal, friendship, ability, and moment of grace arrives as gift rather than possession secured by our own power.
Paul calls this God’s will ‘in Christ Jesus.’ Gratitude is rooted in union with the One who gave thanks, broke bread, endured the cross, and rose into indestructible life.
Joy, prayer, and thanksgiving sustain one another. Prayer brings reality into God’s presence; thanksgiving recalls His character; joy receives Him as the greater good.
Begin where you truly are. Name the wound without disguise, then name the mercy that remains. Thanksgiving need not wait for the whole story to make sense because Christ already holds its ending.

Tozer envisioned no faithful activity as excluded from worship when the whole life is offered to God. Thanksgiving helps return ordinary moments to their true source and purpose.
Paul makes this practice Christ-centered and honest. Gratitude does not deny suffering; it lives within suffering by the unchanging mercies secured in Jesus.
A Prayer
Holy God,
Faithful Father, teach me to give thanks within every circumstance without pretending that evil is good.
Open my eyes to mercies obscured by fear, hurry, and entitlement. Keep prayer alive in me and root my joy in Christ.
Receive this actual day—its gift and grief alike—as a place where I turn toward You. Amen.
