Taste and See
Psalm 34:1–10
“Oh, taste and see that the Lord is good; blessed is the man who trusts in Him!”
Psalm 34:1–10 (NKJV)
David does not invite us merely to agree that the Lord is good. He says, ‘Taste and see.’ Biblical faith includes personal trust in which truth becomes nourishment.
The psalm rises from trouble, fear, and deliverance. God’s goodness is not inferred from an easy life but discovered as the frightened person seeks Him and finds that He answers.
Taste cannot be delegated. Another believer may describe the feast, but each person must receive the offered grace. Borrowed testimony points toward trust; it cannot substitute for it.
Yet experience does not define goodness on its own. Scripture names the Lord’s character and teaches us to interpret both sweetness and sorrow beneath His faithful covenant.
David gathers others into praise: ‘Magnify the Lord with me.’ Personal encounter becomes communal worship rather than private spiritual distinction.
The humble hear and are glad. Those who know their need are ready for provision, while self-sufficiency can stand beside a banquet and insist it is not hungry.
The angel of the Lord encamps around those who fear Him. Holy fear and delighted tasting belong together because God’s goodness is never casual; it is the generosity of the majestic One.
Christ offers Himself as the bread of life. Come with actual need, receive rather than merely analyze, and let practiced trust testify that the Lord is good.

Tozer urged Christians beyond secondhand knowledge toward a real apprehension of God grounded in revealed truth. He resisted the idea that sound doctrine and living encounter must be rivals.
Psalm 34 holds them together: the Lord’s goodness is proclaimed, sought, received, and shared. Experience answers revelation with trusting participation.
A Prayer
Holy God,
Good and holy Lord, forgive me for standing at a distance from truths I readily affirm.
Meet my actual fears and needs. Give me faith to receive Your grace personally and humility to join the testimony of Your people.
Feed me with Christ, the bread of life, until trust becomes praise and Your goodness becomes visible through me. Amen.
