Made for Another Country
Hebrews 11:8–16
“They desire a better, that is, a heavenly country.”

Abraham obeys without possessing a map. Faith begins by trusting the One who calls, even when the destination cannot yet be seen.
He lives in tents within the land of promise because he awaits a city whose architect and builder is God. Promise makes him both present and pilgrim.
The faithful confess that they are strangers on earth. This does not make earthly life unimportant; it prevents temporary arrangements from becoming ultimate loyalties.
Their longing is not merely for a return to what was familiar. They desire a better country prepared by God—a homeland only His promise can provide.
Our deepest desires often attach themselves to places, seasons, beauty, belonging, or joy. The gift is real, yet it cannot bear the whole weight of home.
Faith receives such moments as signs rather than destinations. They awaken gratitude while directing hope beyond themselves toward communion with God and renewed creation.
God is not ashamed to be called their God. The pilgrims’ uncertain journey is enclosed by His covenant welcome and the city He has prepared.
Let holy longing loosen your grasp upon what cannot last. Walk faithfully through the place you inhabit while setting your heart upon the country God has promised.
In Conversation with C. S. Lewis
Lewis explored the ache awakened by beauty and joy—an elusive desire no finite experience can fully satisfy. He treated it as a pointer beyond the gift toward the giver and our true destination.
Hebrews anchors that longing in God’s promise. The hoped-for country is not wishful imagination but the prepared city of the faithful God.
A Prayer
Lord Jesus,
Faithful God, teach me to live gratefully in this world without mistaking it for my final home.
Receive every deep longing and direct it toward the country You have prepared. Give me Abraham’s obedience when the way is not yet clear.
Make me present in love, free in pilgrimage, and confident that You are not ashamed to be called my God. Amen.
