Wisdom from Above
James 3:13–18
“The wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, willing to yield.”

James asks the wise person to demonstrate wisdom through good conduct and meekness. Biblical wisdom is recognized less by impressive claims than by the life it produces.
Bitter envy and selfish ambition may disguise themselves as conviction. When the heart needs to be superior, even correct ideas can become instruments of disorder.
James calls such wisdom earthly and unspiritual because it operates without the character of God. Its fruit is confusion and every evil practice.
Wisdom from above is first pure—undivided in its allegiance to God—then peaceable, gentle, open to reason, full of mercy and good fruit, impartial and sincere.
Being willing to yield does not mean surrendering truth. It means surrendering pride’s demand to dominate, listening honestly, and remaining correctable.
Mercy belongs inside wisdom, not beside it as an optional softness. The God who knows all things has dealt mercifully with us in Christ; wise judgment remembers how it was received.
Peacemakers sow in peace and reap righteousness. The manner of planting belongs to the harvest. We cannot cultivate God’s righteousness through contempt and expect peace to emerge.
Before asking whether your position is intelligent, ask what spirit animates it and what fruit it bears. Invite the wisdom from above to make truth visible through gentleness, mercy, and a life free from pretense.

Lewis distinguished Christian charity from a passing feeling. Love begins as a settled willing of another’s good and often teaches affection to follow faithful action.
James shows that such mercy is not opposed to wisdom. Heavenly wisdom is morally pure and truth-loving precisely as it is gentle, peaceable, sincere, and rich in good fruit.
A Prayer
Lord Jesus,
Father of lights, give me the wisdom that comes from above.
Expose envy and selfish ambition even when they hide inside religious certainty. Make me pure in allegiance, gentle in manner, open to correction, and full of mercy.
Let me sow peace without compromising truth, trusting You to produce a harvest of righteousness. Amen.
