Pure in Heart
Matthew 5:8
“Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God.”
Matthew 5:8 (NKJV)
Jesus locates purity in the heart, the hidden center from which attention, desire, imagination, and action flow. Purity is more than outward respectability.
The pure heart is not the heart that has never been tempted. It is the heart being gathered from divided loyalties into sincere love for God.
Sin clouds sight because it trains us to look at people and creation as objects for consumption, comparison, or control. What we repeatedly desire changes what we are able to see.
Christ does not shame embodied desire. He restores it to love. Purity learns to see another person as one made in God’s image, never merely as a means for private gratification.
This restoration may involve honest confession, wise boundaries, patient healing, and help from trusted believers. Grace is not embarrassed by the long process through which the heart becomes whole.
Jesus promises that the pure in heart will see God. Holiness clarifies vision, not because purity earns His presence, but because undivided love becomes receptive to the One already drawing near.
At the cross, Christ bears both our guilt and our shame. He cleanses the conscience so that repentance can be hopeful rather than hidden.
Bring the imagination as well as the behavior into His light. Ask for a heart that wants one thing above all: to see, love, and honor God in everything.
In Conversation with C. S. Lewis
Lewis distinguished chastity from social convention and treated it as a demanding Christian virtue for every person. He also insisted that repeated failure is not a reason to abandon the pursuit or distrust grace.
Jesus gives purity its deepest purpose. The goal is not anxious moral appearance but a whole heart whose clarified vision is turned toward God.
A Prayer
Lord Jesus,
Holy God, gather my divided desires and cleanse the hidden places of my heart.
Teach me to see every person with honor and every created gift in its rightful place. Give me courage to confess, establish wise boundaries, and receive patient grace.
Fix my deepest desire upon You, that I may walk in purity and see Your beauty. Amen.
