Grace and Truth
John 1:14–18
“The Word became flesh and dwelt among us… full of grace and truth.”
John 1:14–18 (NKJV)
The eternal Word became flesh. Christianity’s public witness begins not with an idea shouted from a distance but with God drawing near in the vulnerability of human life.
John says He dwelt among us. The One through whom all things were made entered a particular place, language, family, and history so that divine glory could be encountered.
His glory is full of grace and truth. Jesus never separates what we often divide: holiness does not become harshness, and mercy does not become evasion.
Truth without grace can be used as a weapon for self-exaltation. Grace without truth can become sentiment unwilling to name what destroys. In Christ, both serve redemption.
From His fullness we receive grace upon grace. Witness therefore comes from abundance received, not superiority achieved. We speak as debtors to mercy.
The law came through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ. John does not despise God’s law but announces its personal fulfillment in the Son.
No one has seen God, yet the Son has made Him known. Every Christian claim about God must be tested by the character and revelation of Jesus.
Enter the world as He did: present rather than distant, truthful without contempt, gracious without disguise, and ready to make the Father known through embodied love.

Lewis called the incarnation the central miracle: the eternal Son descends into created life, death, and apparent defeat, then rises to bring humanity with Him.
John shows the character of that descent. Divine glory takes flesh among us, and its unmistakable fullness is grace and truth together.
A Prayer
Lord Jesus,
Incarnate Word, make my witness resemble Your nearness rather than distant judgment.
Join grace and truth in my speech, presence, and action. Keep me from using truth to exalt myself or kindness to avoid faithfulness.
From the fullness I have received, help me make the Father known through humble love. Amen.
