Seeing through a Glass
1 Corinthians 13:9–13
“For now we see in a mirror, dimly, but then face to face.”

Paul reminds a gifted and divided church that its present knowledge is partial. Spiritual maturity begins with confidence in truth joined to humility about our grasp of it.
The ancient mirror offered a real but indistinct reflection. We truly know God because He has revealed Himself, yet we do not presently see with the fullness that awaits His appearing.
This limitation need not produce skepticism. A partial view can be trustworthy without being complete, just as dawn truly reveals a landscape before every detail is clear.
Humility makes listening possible. Another believer may see an aspect of truth, suffering, or grace that our experience has left obscure.
Prophecies, tongues, and knowledge will pass away, but love remains. The test of spiritual understanding is not how impressive it sounds but whether it serves the enduring life of love.
One day faith will become sight. We will know even as we are known—not with divine omniscience, but with the unveiled personal knowledge of communion.
Until then, faith, hope, and love abide. Faith trusts what God has revealed, hope leans toward completion, and love practices now the life that belongs to eternity.
Hold convictions without arrogance and questions without despair. Look through the dim mirror toward Christ, and let love govern how you walk with others whose sight is also partial.
In Conversation with C. S. Lewis
Lewis explored how a richer reality may be genuinely communicated through a more limited medium without being exhausted by it. The lower expression can point faithfully beyond itself.
Paul gives that insight an eternal horizon: present knowledge is real yet partial, while love prepares us for the face-to-face communion in which partial sight will be fulfilled.
A Prayer
Lord Jesus,
God of light, thank You for truly making Yourself known while I still see only in part.
Keep conviction from becoming pride and limitation from becoming unbelief. Make me patient with others and governed by enduring love.
Sustain faith and hope until I behold Christ face to face and know as I am known. Amen.
