Guard Your Heart
Proverbs 4:20–27
“Keep your heart with all diligence, for out of it spring the issues of life.”

Biblical wisdom addresses the heart because the heart is the wellspring of life. Our words, choices, loyalties, and direction flow from what the inner person trusts and loves.
Guarding the heart is not anxious self-protection. It is attentive stewardship before God—watching what we welcome, rehearse, excuse, and allow to shape desire.
The father tells the child to incline the ear and keep wise words within sight. The heart is guarded through sustained attention to truth, not through emptiness.
A crooked mouth and deceitful speech reveal inner disorder. Wisdom therefore joins inward vigilance to outward honesty; the guarded heart produces truthful words.
The eyes must look straight ahead and the feet must follow a level path. Desire needs direction. Without a worthy end, even sincere longing can scatter a life.
Some desires promise more than created things can bear. When we demand ultimate satisfaction from approval, comfort, romance, possessions, or accomplishment, gifts become masters.
The gospel does not extinguish desire; it purifies and enlarges it. In Christ, the heart learns to receive earthly goods gratefully while resting its final hope in God.
Ask what currently feeds the spring of your life. Turn your eyes toward Christ, remove the stumbling influence you have tolerated, and take one deliberate step on the path of peace.

Lewis observed that deep human longings repeatedly reach beyond the finite things we use to satisfy them. Rather than despising those longings, he directs them toward the lasting country for which we were made.
Proverbs supplies the daily discipline of that hope: guard the source, attend to truth, speak honestly, fix the eyes forward, and make the path of the feet secure.
A Prayer
Lord Jesus,
God of wisdom, search the hidden spring of my life and show me what has been shaping my desires.
Guard my heart through Your Word. Make my speech truthful, my gaze steady, and my path faithful.
Teach me to enjoy Your gifts without asking them to replace You, and direct every longing toward Christ. Amen.
