Week 38
Further Up and Further In
2 Peter 3:10–13
“We, according to His promise, look for new heavens and a new earth in which righteousness dwells.”
2 Peter 3:10–13 (NKJV)
Peter speaks soberly of the day when hidden things are exposed and the present order meets God’s holy judgment. Christian hope is never indifference to truth.
Yet judgment serves renewal. Believers look for new heavens and a new earth where righteousness is at home rather than perpetually resisted.
The promised future is not less substantial than God’s creation but creation liberated from corruption, falsehood, exploitation, and death.
Because this world will be made answerable to God, Peter asks what kind of people we ought to be. Future hope becomes present holiness.
We hasten and await the day through lives aligned with the coming kingdom. Prayer, justice, purity, mercy, and witness are not attempts to build heaven by ourselves; they are faithful anticipation.
The phrase ‘according to His promise’ carries the weight. Our expectation rests not upon human progress but upon the word and character of the God who raised Jesus.
Righteousness will dwell there. Every faithful desire for what is true and whole will find its proper home, and nothing surrendered to Christ will prove wasted.
Look beyond both nostalgia and despair. Let God’s future draw you further into obedience, deeper into love, and nearer to the holiness of the world that is coming.
In Conversation with C. S. Lewis
Lewis’s final Narnia story imaginatively portrays entrance into a country more real, expansive, and alive than the shadowed world left behind. Its literary vision can awaken desire without replacing Scripture’s promise.
Peter provides that promise: God will bring a renewed creation where righteousness dwells, and this hope summons His people to holy life now.
A Prayer
Lord Jesus,
Promise-keeping God, fix my hope upon the new heavens and new earth You will bring.
Purify me from nostalgia that clings backward and despair that expects nothing ahead. Make me holy, watchful, and eager for Christ’s appearing.
Let the coming home of righteousness shape my choices, loves, and witness today. Amen.
Think and Walk with Christ
Let truth become wisdom.
Return often to 2 Peter 3:10–13. Ask the Spirit to renew not only what you believe, but how you see and live.
