The Beginning of Wisdom
Proverbs 1:1–7
“The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge, but fools despise wisdom and instruction.”

Proverbs is given for more than collecting clever sayings. It aims to form wisdom, justice, judgment, and equity—a whole life skillfully aligned with God’s reality.
The simple may gain prudence and the young knowledge and discretion. Scripture does not despise inexperience; it invites the teachable into a lifelong apprenticeship.
The wise person continues listening. Wisdom is not the moment we no longer need instruction but the maturity to recognize how much remains to be learned.
Everything begins with the fear of the Lord. This is not cringing before arbitrary power. It is reverent recognition that God is God, His world has moral shape, and our lives answer to Him.
Without that center, intelligence may become skill at pursuing destructive ends. Information can multiply while wisdom diminishes because knowledge alone cannot tell us what deserves love.
God trains both judgment and affection. The wise heart learns not only to identify the good but to delight in it, grieve evil, and act faithfully when appetite pulls elsewhere.
Foolishness despises correction because it protects the self from reality. Wisdom receives instruction as mercy, even when the truth wounds pride.
Begin again at the beginning. Bow before the Lord, open yourself to correction, and ask Him to join clear thought with a heart trained to love what He calls good.
In Conversation with C. S. Lewis
In The Abolition of Man, Lewis challenged an education that debunks value while expecting virtue. He argued for the formation of rightly ordered sentiments that mediate between reason and appetite.
Proverbs gives that formation its biblical center: the fear of the Lord. Wisdom grows as truth, affection, and action are trained together beneath God’s authority.
A Prayer
Lord Jesus,
Lord of wisdom, teach me reverence that sees Your world truthfully and receives Your instruction gladly.
Join clear thought to rightly ordered love. Correct what is foolish in me and free me from the pride that resists being taught.
Make me wise in justice, mercy, judgment, and ordinary faithfulness for the glory of Christ. Amen.
