Childlike Wonder
Matthew 18:1–5
“Unless you are converted and become as little children, you will by no means enter the kingdom of heaven.”

The disciples ask Jesus who will be greatest. He answers by placing a child in their midst, turning a discussion of rank into a summons to conversion.
Jesus does not romanticize immaturity. Children can be selfish and fearful. He points to their low social place and their dependence—the opposite of the disciples’ struggle for importance.
To become childlike is to relinquish the fantasy of self-sufficiency. We receive the kingdom as gift because we cannot manufacture, purchase, or control it.
Dependence opens the door to wonder. The self-important mind must explain and possess everything; the humble mind can attend, receive, and be surprised by grace.
Christian maturity does not outgrow this posture. The wiser we become, the more clearly we recognize the immeasurable goodness we have not mastered.
Jesus also identifies Himself with the little one: whoever receives such a child receives Him. Wonder that claims to love God while overlooking the vulnerable is spiritual sentiment, not kingdom sight.
The Son has brought us to His Father. In Him we are not abandoned adults pretending to need nothing, but beloved children learning trust and resemblance.
Lay down the contest for greatness. Receive today, another person, and the kingdom itself as gifts from the Father, and let humble attention restore your capacity for wonder.

Jesus begins that formation with a converted posture: humble dependence that receives the kingdom and welcomes the overlooked person in His name.
A Prayer
Lord Jesus,
Father, turn me from self-importance and the pretense that I can sustain myself.
Give me a childlike heart—humble, teachable, trusting, and awake to Your gifts. Help me welcome those the world considers small.
Form the life of Christ in me until wonder becomes worship and dependence becomes joyful confidence. Amen.
