Week 33
Longing for Home
Psalm 84
“My soul longs, yes, even faints for the courts of the Lord.”
Psalm 84 (NKJV)
The psalmist does not merely admire God’s dwelling; his whole being longs and faints for it. Desire has become prayer.
At the center of the longing is not a building but the living God. The courts are lovely because He is there, and heart and flesh cry out for Him.
Even the sparrow finds a home near the altar. The image assures the small, restless, and vulnerable that God’s presence is a place of welcome.
Those journeying toward Zion pass through the Valley of Baca, a place of weeping, yet they make it a spring. Pilgrimage does not avoid sorrow; grace changes how sorrow is traveled.
They go from strength to strength. God often supplies the journey one portion at a time rather than granting enough strength to make dependence unnecessary.
One day in His courts is better than a thousand elsewhere. Worship reorders value by placing every lesser good beside the incomparable joy of God Himself.
The Lord is sun and shield, giving grace and glory and withholding no good thing from those who walk uprightly. The promised home is secured by His generous character.
Let homesickness become holy direction. Carry your longing through today’s valley, receive present strength, and set your heart upon the God in whose presence every exile ends.
In Conversation with C. S. Lewis
Lewis treated our persistent longing for an unattained home as more than nostalgia. Its deepest form directs us beyond remembered moments toward communion with the God for whom we were made.
Psalm 84 gives that longing a name and a path: the living God is the destination, and even the valley becomes part of the pilgrimage into His presence.
A Prayer
Lord Jesus,
Living God, awaken in me a longing deeper than comfort—the desire for Your presence.
Meet me in every valley of weeping and make it a place where grace springs up. Lead me from strength to strength.
Be my sun, shield, and final home, until every restless desire finds its rest in You. Amen.
Think and Walk with Christ
Let truth become wisdom.
Return often to Psalm 84. Ask the Spirit to renew not only what you believe, but how you see and live.
