Test Everything
1 Thessalonians 5:19–22

Paul holds together two commands we often separate: do not quench the Spirit, and test everything. Christian openness is not gullibility, and discernment is not suspicion toward every work of grace.
We may quench the Spirit by resisting truth because it disrupts our control. We may also misuse spiritual language to protect claims from honest examination.
Prophetic speech is not to be despised, but it is never self-authenticating. Every message must be tested by Scripture, the gospel of Christ, the fruit it bears, and the wisdom of the believing community.
Testing requires patience. A claim may feel powerful, novel, or emotionally compelling while still distorting God’s character or drawing attention away from Jesus.
Discernment also examines the assumptions of the surrounding culture. Ideas repeated everywhere do not become true by familiarity, and Christian language does not become faithful merely by sounding traditional.
The goal is not endless criticism. We test so that we may hold fast what is good. Truth should lead to gratitude, obedience, courage, and love.
Paul’s final command is concrete: abstain from every form of evil. Intellectual discernment that never changes conduct has not completed its work.
Welcome the Spirit’s light and bring every claim beneath it. Refuse both cynical dismissal and careless acceptance; hold the good with conviction and release what cannot survive the truth of Christ.
In Conversation with C. S. Lewis
Lewis urged Christian communicators to distinguish the faith itself from their explanations of it and to understand the real questions of their hearers. Clear thinking required humility about one’s own formulations.
Paul places that intellectual care within the Spirit-led life. The church tests without quenching, holds fast without pride, and lets discerned truth become holy practice.
A Prayer
Lord Jesus,
Holy Spirit, keep me open to Your work without becoming careless about truth.
Give me humility to test my assumptions, patience to examine what is claimed, and courage to release what is false.
Anchor every judgment in Scripture and the lordship of Christ. Help me hold fast the good and turn away from evil. Amen.
