Speaking to the Unknown God

Paul is provoked by Athens’s idols, yet he does not begin with insult. He observes carefully enough to understand the city’s worship, questions, poetry, and longing.

He finds a point of contact at an altar to an unknown god. Respectful attention does not mean agreement; it prepares the way for clear proclamation.

Paul names the Creator who gives life and cannot be confined to temples or served as though He needed anything. The gospel challenges both pagan religion and every modern attempt to domesticate God.

He affirms that humanity reaches for God and even quotes their poets. Truth can recognize fragments of insight without pretending those fragments are the whole revelation.

Then Paul calls for repentance. Cultural understanding serves, rather than replaces, the announcement that God commands a response.

The center is Jesus, appointed to judge in righteousness and publicly vindicated by resurrection. Paul does not leave his hearers with a generic spirituality.

Responses differ: some mock, some postpone, and some believe. Faithful witness cannot control reception; it can only speak truth intelligibly and entrust hearers to God.

Study the people you hope to reach. Listen for both their longings and idols, then speak of the Creator, repentance, resurrection, and Christ in language they can genuinely hear.
