Render unto Caesar
Mark 12:13–17
“Render to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s, and to God the things that are God’s.”

The question presented to Jesus is a trap. If He rejects the tax, Rome may condemn Him; if He endorses it carelessly, the people may regard Him as faithless.
Jesus asks for the coin and draws attention to its image and inscription. The currency belongs within Caesar’s ordered sphere, and paying tax need not equal worship.
Then His answer opens a far greater claim: give to God what belongs to God. The coin bears Caesar’s image; every human being bears the image of the Creator.
Civil authority has a real but limited place. Christians may owe taxes, honor, participation, and obedience, yet no government possesses the conscience or deserves ultimate allegiance.
Because Caesar is not God, political movements must never become objects of salvation, identity, or unquestioning loyalty.
Because public life matters to neighbors, disciples must not use heavenly citizenship as an excuse for negligence. Love seeks justice, truth, peace, and the protection of the vulnerable.
Faithfulness may sometimes require respectful resistance when authority demands what belongs to God alone. Such courage must be governed by holiness rather than partisan contempt.
Render each obligation in its proper order. Participate without idolatry, disagree without dehumanizing, and give your whole image-bearing life to God.

Lewis warned against reducing all cultural life to political utility or assuming that public programs can perform the inward transformation belonging to God.
Jesus neither dismisses civic duty nor makes it supreme. His answer limits Caesar beneath the Creator’s prior and total claim upon every image-bearing person.
A Prayer
Lord Jesus,
Sovereign God, order my civic responsibilities beneath my complete allegiance to You.
Keep me from political idolatry, cynical withdrawal, and contempt for those who differ. Give me courage to seek justice and wisdom to honor proper authority.
Receive my whole life, stamped with Your image and belonging finally to You. Amen.
