Week 29
Overcome Evil with Good
Romans 12:17–21
“Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.”
Romans 12:17–21 (NKJV)
Evil seeks more than injury; it seeks reproduction. It invites the wounded person to adopt its contempt, deception, and vengeance.
Paul commands believers not to repay evil for evil. This refusal is not passivity but resistance to evil’s attempt to form us in its image.
We are to pursue what is honorable and, as far as it depends on us, live peaceably. The qualification recognizes that peace cannot always be secured by one party.
Vengeance belongs to God because only His judgment is perfectly informed, holy, and free from corruption.
Feeding an enemy and giving drink answer hostility with tangible good. Such mercy may awaken conscience, but it is not manipulation.
Doing good does not prohibit protection, truthful testimony, or lawful justice. It governs the spirit and purpose with which those actions are taken.
Christ overcame evil through the cross—not by calling it harmless, but by absorbing its assault and rising beyond its verdict.
Refuse evil’s second victory in your heart. Entrust judgment to God and practice one good that bears the recognizable character of Jesus.
In Conversation with Richard Wurmbrand
Wurmbrand opposed an oppressive ideology while continuing to seek the redemption of the people serving it.
His witness illustrates Paul’s distinction: resistance can be uncompromising toward evil and still refuse hatred as its governing power.
A Prayer
Lord Jesus,
Holy Judge, keep vengeance from taking Your place in me.
Give wisdom for truthful resistance, protection of the vulnerable, and concrete goodness toward enemies.
Do not let evil reproduce itself in my heart. Overcome it through the life of Christ. Amen.
Stand with Christ This Week
Faithfulness begins here.
Return often to Romans 12:17–21. Let courage grow from a clearer vision of Christ, never from confidence in yourself.
