A City on a Hill
Matthew 5:13–16
“A city that is set on a hill cannot be hidden.”
Matthew 5:13–16 (NKJV)
Jesus tells ordinary disciples what grace is making them: salt of the earth and light of the world.
Salt serves by presence, and light serves by visibility. Neither exists for admiration of itself.
A lamp belongs on its stand so the household may see. Christian witness must resist both fearful concealment and theatrical display.
Good works become visible not to magnify the disciple, but so observers may glorify the Father.
Some churches must gather secretly for safety. Hidden meetings do not create hidden faith; courage, mercy, and truth still illuminate their world.
Those with freedom should not confuse public access with spiritual brightness. A prominent church can lose savor through compromise.
The light of Christ appears in faithful work, costly generosity, truthful speech, hospitality, and love that refuses hatred.
Receive the place God has set you. Do the good belonging to it and let every ray direct attention toward the Father.

Jesus’ images show why: witness is carried by the lived character of His people, and even restricted light continues to serve those near it.
A Prayer
Lord Jesus,
Father of lights, preserve Your church in both freedom and restriction.
Keep us from cowardice, performance, and compromise. Make our common life useful like salt and clear like a lamp.
Let visible goodness direct praise to You alone. Amen.
