Light in the Darkness
John 1:1–14
“The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not overcome it.”
John 1:1–14 (NKJV)
John begins before darkness: the eternal Word is with God, is God, and gives life to all creation.
Darkness is real, but it is neither original nor ultimate. The light shines, and darkness cannot master it.
Christian hope therefore does not depend on underestimating evil. It depends on knowing the identity of Jesus.
The Word becomes flesh and enters the world’s rejection rather than illuminating it from a safe distance.
His glory appears full of grace and truth. Light exposes without cruelty and welcomes without falsehood.
Witnesses like John do not create the light; they testify to it. The church’s calling is faithful visibility, not self-importance.
Persecution may conceal congregations and silence public platforms, yet it cannot extinguish Christ or prevent quiet testimony.
Turn toward the incarnate Word. Receive His life, bear witness to His grace and truth, and trust the light to keep shining.

John gives that persistence its deepest explanation: Christ is the uncreated light, and His witnesses testify to a brightness darkness cannot overcome.
A Prayer
Lord Jesus,
Eternal Word, shine in every place shadowed by fear and falsehood.
Make Your persecuted church steadfast, and keep my witness full of both grace and truth.
Free me from self-importance and let Your unconquered life become visible. Amen.
