A Soft Answer
Proverbs 15:1–4
“A soft answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger.”

A soft answer is not a weak answer. It is speech strong enough to refuse the emotional terms set by another person’s anger.
Harshness multiplies heat. Even a true statement can become destructive when spoken to wound, humiliate, or display superiority.
Gentleness does not guarantee peace. Some wrath rejects every answer, and silence or distance may be wiser.
The Lord sees every place and knows both the visible conflict and the hidden motives shaping our words.
A wholesome tongue becomes a tree of life. Speech can create shade, nourishment, and a place where truth may be heard.
Perversity breaks the spirit by twisting truth toward domination. Christian witness must reject manipulation as well as falsehood.
Softness concerns manner, not dilution. Jesus could speak directly while remaining free of vanity and spite.
Before answering, bring your tongue beneath Christ’s rule. Seek words that lower needless heat, preserve truth, and leave room for grace.

Lord Jesus,
Lord of truth, govern my tongue when anger invites anger.
Give courage to speak clearly, restraint to refuse needless heat, and wisdom to choose silence when speech would only harm.
Make my words a tree of life shaped by the gentleness of Christ. Amen.
