The Audience of One
Colossians 3:22–24
“Whatever you do, do it heartily, as to the Lord and not to men.”

Paul addresses work performed under human authority and relocates its deepest meaning. The final audience is not the supervisor, customer, congregation, or crowd, but the Lord Christ.
Human approval is unstable. It can energize us when present and hollow us when withheld. Living before Christ frees good work from dependence on recognition.
This freedom does not make people irrelevant. Work done for the Lord becomes more attentive to them, not less, because we no longer need to use them as mirrors for our worth.
To work heartily is to bring the whole self. Excellence becomes love rather than display; integrity remains when oversight disappears; humble tasks receive dignity from the One to whom they are offered.
The text also comforts those whose labor is unseen or undervalued. Christ notices the care, endurance, preparation, and service that others overlook. No offering given to Him is lost.
Yet the audience of One must not excuse abusive authority or demand silent endurance of evil. Christ is Lord over every earthly power, and allegiance to Him can require truthful resistance and wise help.
Our inheritance comes from the Lord. Identity and reward no longer hang upon titles or praise. We can receive correction without collapse and success without pride.
Before beginning the next task, place it consciously before Jesus. Let His presence gather your attention and His pleasure become enough.
In Conversation with Dietrich Bonhoeffer
Bonhoeffer described the devout life as hidden from the calculating gaze that seeks spiritual credit. The disciple acts before the Father, surrendering the need to preserve an image.
Such hiddenness is not withdrawal from responsibility. It makes service more truthful because Christ, rather than applause, becomes its center and reward.
A Prayer
Lord Jesus,
Lord Christ, gather my divided attention and free me from dependence on human praise.
Receive my visible and invisible work. Give me excellence without vanity, humility without fear, and courage where authority must be challenged.
Let Your presence be my deepest audience and Your promised inheritance my security. Amen.
