The Yoke of Obedience
1 John 5:1–5
“For this is the love of God, that we keep His commandments. And His commandments are not burdensome.”

John joins faith, new birth, love, and obedience. In the life of God they belong together. Trust in Christ creates a family resemblance that takes form in how we live.
Obedience is not love’s enemy. Love listens seriously to the beloved. To say we love God while treating His will as intrusion misunderstands both love and God.
His commandments are not burdensome because they no longer function as a ladder toward acceptance. Christ has come down to us. We obey from belonging, not for belonging.
Commands may still be costly. Forgiveness can ache; truth may expose us; purity requires refusal. ‘Not burdensome’ does not mean effortless. It means God’s will is no longer alien to the heart being made new.
The world trains desire toward self-protection, possession, and applause. John says faith overcomes that world. Its promises become too small and its threats are not final.
Obedience grows as we behold the Son, remember our belonging, and receive the Spirit’s power for the next concrete act.
Do not wait for obedience to feel dramatic. A truthful answer, patient response, guarded thought, or kept promise reveals that love has entered the will.
Christ’s yoke does not make us servants hoping to become children. In the Son, we are children learning the glad freedom of the Father’s house.

Bonhoeffer’s theme of simple obedience challenges the impulse to use endless interpretation as shelter from a clear word of Jesus. Where Christ’s will is plain, faith takes the next step.
Such obedience is never achievement detached from grace. It is the form faith takes when the disciple trusts that the One commanding is also sustaining.
A Prayer
Lord Jesus,
Father, thank You that in Christ I obey as Your beloved child, not as a stranger trying to earn a place.
Unite my faith, love, and will. Where Your command is clear, deliver me from delay and give me grace for simple obedience.
Let this week’s quiet choices reveal that Your love is making me new. Amen.
