Submit to One Another
Ephesians 5:15–21

Paul’s call to mutual submission grows from a life filled with the Spirit—wise, thankful, worshipful, and attentive to Christ. It is not mere social compliance.
To submit is to surrender the demand always to prevail. We make room for another’s good, receive correction, share influence, and refuse to treat personal preference as divine command.
Mutual submission is governed by reverence for Christ. Because He is Lord, no human being may claim absolute obedience or use this passage to protect coercion, secrecy, or abuse.
Jesus defines authority through self-giving service. He knelt with a towel, welcomed the overlooked, spoke truth to power, and gave Himself without surrendering righteousness.
Humility does not mean pretending we have no gifts or convictions. It means offering them without insisting that our importance be secured through control.
Communities shaped by submission listen before deciding, honor weaker voices, accept inconvenience, and allow leadership to remain accountable.
This is difficult because pride can wear both loud and quiet forms. We may dominate openly or withdraw cooperation until others yield. The Spirit exposes both strategies.
Ask where love invites you to yield and where faithfulness requires you to speak. Under Christ, humility and courage become companions rather than enemies.

Bonhoeffer described meekness as regarding another Christian as deserving patient service rather than arranging community around one’s own importance.
Such humility remains answerable to Christ. It supports mutual care and accountable leadership; it cannot sanctify domination or require cooperation with evil.
A Prayer
Lord Jesus,
Lord Jesus, You are the only absolute Lord of Your church.
Free me from domination, passive resistance, and the need always to be right. Give me humility to yield and courage to speak truth.
Fill our fellowship with gratitude, wisdom, accountability, and mutual service in reverence for You. Amen.
