One Body, Many Members

Paul does not describe the church as an audience gathered around similar preferences. By one Spirit, distinct people are joined into the living body of Christ.

Unity does not erase difference. A body needs eyes and hands, ears and feet. The Spirit’s work is displayed through gifts, histories, ages, and callings that cannot replace one another.

Comparison therefore wounds the body twice. Inferiority says, ‘I do not belong’; superiority says, ‘I do not need you.’ Paul answers both with God’s deliberate arrangement of every member.

Belonging precedes usefulness. We are members because Christ has received us, not because our contribution is impressive. Service grows from grace rather than anxiety about our place.

The weaker members receive special honor. Christian community is measured not by the prominence of its strongest people but by its tenderness toward those the world overlooks.

When one member suffers, all suffer; when one is honored, all rejoice. The Spirit trains us out of isolation and envy into shared sorrow and unguarded celebration.

This body remains imperfect. Community can disappoint us precisely because it is real. Christ meets us not in an imagined church but among the actual people He has joined to Himself.

Name your place with gratitude, and name another member you need. The body grows when every gift is offered and every person is received as belonging to Christ.
