Wherever He Leads
Luke 9:57–62
“No one, having put his hand to the plow, and looking back, is fit for the kingdom of God.”

Three conversations expose three conditions we place upon following. One volunteers without understanding the road. Another receives the call but asks for delay. A third wants to follow while keeping one hand upon the life behind.
Jesus answers differently because He sees each competing refuge. Comfort, obligation, and divided attention can become respectable ways of saying, ‘I will follow—on my terms.’
The Son of Man has nowhere to lay His head. Following cannot be reduced to improved circumstances. The path may lead through uncertainty, and Christ Himself must be our home.
Jesus’ words about the dead and farewell sound severe. He is not dismissing grief or family love. He reveals the urgency and supremacy of the kingdom. No earthly claim may permanently postpone obedience.
The plow requires a forward gaze. Looking back bends the furrow. Nostalgia for the life we controlled can distort present faithfulness when discipleship grows harder.
Wherever He leads is not confidence in our courage. Peter made such promises and failed. It is daily dependence upon grace that calls us again after failure.
We follow Jesus into workplaces, hospital rooms, difficult reconciliations, hidden service, and costly witness. The geography matters less than the companionship: the disciple goes where the Lord goes.
Release the conditions attached to yes. You do not follow an uncertain road alone. Christ has gone ahead, walks beside you, and waits at the journey’s end.
In Conversation with Dietrich Bonhoeffer
Bonhoeffer presented Jesus’ call as an interruption creating a new situation: the disciple leaves old securities and steps where faith can become concrete.
The point is not impulsiveness. It is recognition that no prior claim can negotiate away the Lord’s authority. Grace gives the disciple freedom to go.
A Prayer
Lord Jesus,
Lord Jesus, reveal the conditions and delays hidden within my promise to follow You.
Be my home when the road is uncertain, my strength when obedience is costly, and my mercy when I fail. Turn my gaze from the life behind to Your presence ahead.
Wherever You lead, give me grace to answer yes today. Amen.
