Ready for Every Good Work
Titus 3:1–8
“Those who have believed in God should be careful to maintain good works.”

Paul describes Christians living visibly among neighbors and authorities: peaceable, gentle, free from slander, and ready for every good work.
Public faithfulness is not grounded in moral superiority. Paul immediately remembers that believers too were once foolish, enslaved, malicious, and consumed by envy.
Then the kindness and love of God appeared. Salvation came not because of righteous works we had done, but according to mercy through renewal by the Holy Spirit.
Grace is therefore both the source and school of good works. We do not serve to earn rescue; because we have been rescued, our lives become available for another’s good.
Readiness requires preparation. Communities can learn local needs, build trustworthy partnerships, train volunteers, safeguard vulnerable people, and set aside resources before a crisis arrives.
Gentleness does not prohibit principled disagreement with authorities or public wrongdoing. It governs our manner so courage does not decay into contempt or slander.
Paul calls these works good and profitable for everyone. Christian service seeks genuine public benefit, not merely access, reputation, or leverage for the church.
Look at your community with renewed mercy. Ask what good is needed, what preparation is missing, and how the kindness of God might take visible form through willing hands.
In Conversation with Dietrich Bonhoeffer
Bonhoeffer insisted that discipleship is publicly visible because Jesus’ call claims the believer’s embodied life within the world. Grace cannot remain an invisible religious possession.
Titus protects that visibility from self-righteous activism. Good works arise from remembered sin, received mercy, and the Spirit’s renewal.
A Prayer
Lord Jesus,
God of kindness and mercy, thank You for saving me apart from any righteous work of my own.
Make me gentle, peaceable, and ready to serve the common good. Give courage without contempt and preparation without self-reliance.
Let Your renewing grace become visible through works that genuinely benefit our neighbors. Amen.
