Week 29
Forgive as You Were Forgiven
Colossians 3:12–15
“Forgiving one another, if anyone has a complaint against another; even as Christ forgave you.”
Colossians 3:12–15 (NKJV)
Paul begins forgiveness by naming who believers already are: chosen, holy, and beloved. We do not forgive in order to become loved; we forgive from within the mercy that has clothed us.
Community inevitably produces complaints. Proximity reveals weaknesses, words wound, expectations fail, and real wrongs require truthful attention. Scripture does not pretend otherwise.
Forgiveness is not calling evil good or abandoning wise boundaries. It refuses personal vengeance and releases the debt into the hands of the just and merciful God.
The measure is Christ’s forgiveness. At the cross He neither minimized our sin nor withheld Himself from sinners. Grace tells the whole truth and offers reconciliation at immeasurable cost.
Some forgiveness begins as obedience before it becomes a feeling. The heart may need to release the same injury repeatedly while grief, accountability, and healing unfold over time.
Paul surrounds forgiveness with compassion, kindness, humility, meekness, and patience. These are not decorative virtues; they are the clothing required for people to remain together in truth.
Above all, put on love. Love binds the community without hiding its fractures, and the peace of Christ becomes the ruling voice when resentment demands the final word.
Bring one name before Christ today. Remember the mercy you have received, tell the truth about the wound, and ask for the next faithful step toward freedom and peace.
In Conversation with Dietrich Bonhoeffer
Bonhoeffer taught that Christians learn to bear with one another because Christ has borne them. Another person’s weakness becomes an occasion for patient, cruciform love rather than domination.
This bearing does not erase accountability. It creates the grace-filled ground on which truth, repentance, forgiveness, and restored fellowship can become possible.
A Prayer
Lord Jesus,
Forgiving Christ, clothe me again in the mercy I have received from You.
Keep me from revenge, denial, and self-righteousness. Give me truthful boundaries, patient love, and willingness to release every debt to You.
Let Your peace rule my heart and make reconciliation possible wherever wisdom and repentance open the way. Amen.
Walk This Week with Christ
Let grace become obedience.
Return often to Colossians 3:12–15. Read slowly, listen for the call of Jesus, and carry His word into the choices before you.
