Ambassadors for Christ
2 Corinthians 5:14–21
“We are ambassadors for Christ, as though God were pleading through us.”

Paul begins with the love of Christ constraining us. Mission is not driven by anxiety about the church’s survival but by the crucified love that has captured and redirected a life.
Christ died for all so that those who live should no longer live for themselves. Reconciliation creates a new center: the risen One whose purposes now order our freedom.
In Christ there is new creation. The gospel is not cosmetic improvement but God’s decisive work of making enemies His children and opening a future no past can manufacture.
God reconciled us to Himself and then entrusted us with the ministry of reconciliation. The reconciled become reconcilers; grace received becomes grace carried.
An ambassador does not invent the message or represent personal ambition. The church speaks under Christ’s authority with His appeal: be reconciled to God.
That appeal must be embodied. Peacemaking, truthful repentance, racial and social neighbor-love, and refusal of contempt make the message credible without replacing its center in the cross.
Reconciliation is costly because God made the sinless Christ to be sin for us, that in Him we might become God’s righteousness. Peace rests upon substitution, not denial.
Stand in the world as Christ’s representative with humility. Plead rather than coerce, embody what you announce, and let His love—not fear or pride—constrain you.
In Conversation with Dietrich Bonhoeffer
Bonhoeffer’s messengers carry a word that is not their own and go under authority they did not create. Their dependence protects mission from becoming self-promotion.
Paul identifies that word as reconciliation accomplished in Christ. The ambassador’s life and appeal point away from the messenger toward God’s costly action at the cross.
A Prayer
Lord Jesus,
God of reconciliation, thank You for making peace through the sinless Christ who bore our sin.
Let His love constrain me beyond self-centered living. Purify my motives and make my relationships consistent with the message I carry.
Plead through Your church with truth, humility, and courage: be reconciled to God. Amen.
