A Cup of Cold Water
Matthew 10:40–42
“Whoever gives one of these little ones only a cup of cold water…shall by no means lose his reward.”

Jesus places eternal significance inside an ordinary cup of water. The kingdom is not limited to dramatic sacrifice; it is present wherever humble love receives someone in His name.
To welcome Christ’s messenger is to welcome Christ, and to welcome Christ is to welcome the Father. Hospitality becomes holy because Jesus identifies Himself with those He sends.
The ‘little ones’ possess no obvious power to repay us. Service offered to them exposes whether our generosity depends on status, usefulness, or recognition.
Cold water is practical, immediate, and suited to the actual need. Love pays attention before it acts; it does not offer what displays the giver while overlooking what refreshes the receiver.
Many people wait for resources, expertise, or a perfect opportunity before serving. Jesus dignifies what is already within reach—a drink, a ride, a meal, an introduction, a few attentive minutes.
The promise of reward does not commercialize mercy. It assures hidden servants that the Father sees what the world considers small and remembers every act joined to Christ.
Receiving is also discipleship. The messenger must accept dependence, and the host discovers that opening a hand or home may become an encounter with Jesus.
Do not despise the cup you can offer today. Place a simple mercy into Christ’s hands and trust Him to give it kingdom weight.
In Conversation with Dietrich Bonhoeffer
Bonhoeffer connected the reception of Jesus’ messengers with receiving Christ Himself. The disciple’s presence and the neighbor’s welcome become a meeting place appointed by God.
This gives ordinary hospitality profound dignity without making the servant grandiose. The gift remains small; Christ makes it significant.
A Prayer
Lord Jesus,
Lord Jesus, open my eyes to the little ones with whom You identify.
Free me from waiting for impressive opportunities. Give me attention to notice the actual need and generosity to offer what I have.
Receive every hidden cup of water as love given to You, and teach me also to receive the care of others humbly. Amen.
