Week 30

Walk in the Spirit

Galatians 5:16–18

“Walk in the Spirit, and you shall not fulfill the lust of the flesh.”

Galatians 5:16–18 (NKJV)

Paul describes the Christian life as a walk. It is not one dramatic leap toward maturity, but a succession of ordinary steps taken under the presence and guidance of the Holy Spirit.

The command begins positively: walk in the Spirit. We sometimes make holiness entirely about refusing sin, but Paul directs attention first toward the living Guide who supplies better desires and a truer path.

The flesh remains and resists. Conversion does not make temptation imaginary, nor does conflict prove that grace is absent. The struggle exists because the Spirit has awakened a new allegiance within us.

Walking requires attentiveness. We listen through Scripture, respond to conviction, obey the truth already made clear, and refuse to rush ahead of dependence upon God.

It also requires repeated choices. The Spirit’s leading appears in concrete places: the word left unsaid, the apology offered, the desire denied, the neighbor served, and the truth obeyed when no one is watching.

This walk rests upon union with Christ, not fear of condemnation. We are not guided by the Spirit in order to earn a place in Christ; because we are in Christ, the Spirit dwells within and teaches us to live accordingly.

There will be stumbles. When we fall, the Spirit does not direct us toward hiding or self-punishment, but toward confession, the sufficiency of Christ, and the next faithful step.

Do not attempt the whole road at once this week. Ask where the Spirit is leading now. Place your foot there in faith, and then remain attentive for the step that follows.

A Voice from Charles Spurgeon

“The man who is in Christ Jesus commits himself to the guidance of the Holy Ghost.”

Spurgeon places the Spirit-guided life within the security of union with Christ. Guidance is not anxious self-improvement but trusting submission to the indwelling God.

The Spirit leads in harmony with the written Word, never away from the character and commands of Christ.

A Prayer

Lord Jesus,

Holy Spirit, I confess how quickly I follow impulse, habit, and self-will. Bring my steps beneath Your wise and holy guidance.

Make Scripture clear, conviction welcome, and obedience concrete. When the flesh resists, remind me that I belong to Christ and that Your power is present.

Lead me through the next faithful step, and make my walk consistent with the gospel I have received. Amen.

Spend This Week with Christ

There is no hurry.

Return often to Galatians 5:16–18. Read it slowly, in the morning and again before sleep. Carry its words into the ordinary places of your week.

Ask prayerfullyWhat present choice most needs the Spirit’s guidance?Where have I mistaken spiritual conflict for evidence that God has abandoned His work in me?

The purpose is not merely to finish the reading, but to behold Christ more clearly and walk with Him more closely.
