Week 18
Beside Still Waters
Psalm 23
“He makes me to lie down in green pastures; He leads me beside the still waters. He restores my soul.”
Psalm 23 (NKJV)
David’s confidence begins with a relationship: “The Lord is my shepherd.” Every green pasture, quiet water, restored soul, and fearless valley flows from those words.
Sheep do not locate good pasture by their own wisdom. They depend upon the shepherd to know where nourishment can be found and when it is time to rest. The psalm invites us into that same glad dependence.
There are seasons when God makes us lie down because we would otherwise keep moving. Rest can feel unproductive to a hurried heart, yet the Shepherd knows that exhausted souls cannot be driven into health.
The still waters speak of peace, but also of provision. Christ does not merely quiet us; He gives Himself as living water. His presence refreshes desires that lesser things leave thirsty.
He restores the soul that has wandered, wearied, or grown thin. Restoration may come through Scripture, prayer, worship, friendship, repentance, or a quiet mercy we almost overlooked. Whatever the means, the Shepherd is the source.
The path then leads onward in righteousness. Rest is not escape from faithful living; it prepares us for it. The Shepherd refreshes us so we may walk in ways that honor His name.
Even the valley belongs within His guidance. We do not conclude that He has left because the landscape grows dark. The pronouns become more intimate there: no longer only “He leads,” but “You are with me.”
Let Christ set the pace this week. Receive the pasture He provides, drink from the truth He gives, and allow yourself to be led. The Shepherd is more committed to your soul than you are.
A Voice from Charles Spurgeon
“The Lord is my Shepherd; I shall not want.”
Spurgeon hears music in David’s personal confidence. The peace of Psalm 23 rests not in the scenery but in belonging to the Shepherd.
Because He is ours and we are His, every true need will meet His wise and faithful care.
A Prayer
Lord Jesus,
Good Shepherd, quiet my hurry and lead me where my soul can receive from You.
Restore what is weary, correct what has wandered, and give me grace to trust Your pace. Keep me near when the path is pleasant and nearer still when it passes through shadow.
You are with me; therefore I have all I truly need. Amen.
Spend This Week with Christ
There is no hurry.
Return often to Psalm 23. Read it slowly, in the morning and again before sleep. Carry its words into the ordinary places of your week.
The purpose is not merely to finish the reading, but to behold Christ more clearly and walk with Him more closely.
