Salt and Light

Jesus looks upon humble disciples and says, “You are the salt of the earth ... You are the light of the world.” He gives this identity before their influence appears large enough to deserve it.

Salt works by entering what it preserves. Light serves by shining into darkness. The church is not called to withdraw from the world in fear or dissolve into it unnoticed, but to remain distinctly Christ’s while moving near in love.

Our light is borrowed. Jesus is the true Light, and whatever shines through His people comes from fellowship with Him. We are lamps, not the flame’s source.

Character carries witness. Truthfulness, purity, courage, mercy, and hope make the gospel visible before explanations begin. Hidden compromise dims what public words attempt to declare.

Yet Jesus also warns against hiding beneath a basket. Fear of disapproval can make faith private at precisely the moment a neighbor needs to see the reason for our hope.

Good works are meant to be visible without becoming performance. The aim is not that people admire the lamp, but that they glorify the Father whose goodness the light reveals.

A small lamp does not need to illuminate the whole horizon. It needs to shine where it has been placed. Faithfulness in a household, workplace, classroom, or neighborhood may guide someone nearer to Christ.
