The Good Shepherd

Among many voices that promise safety, Jesus distinguishes Himself as the Good Shepherd. He does not approach the flock as a stranger, thief, or hired hand. The sheep belong to Him, and He comes through the door in truth and love.

The Shepherd knows His sheep. He does not care for humanity only as an anonymous multitude. He calls His own by name. Every fear, weakness, wandering, and need is already known to Him with a knowledge more tender than our knowledge of ourselves.

His sheep learn His voice. This recognition grows through Scripture, prayer, obedience, and long familiarity with His character. The voice of Jesus will never contradict His written Word or lead us away from holiness, humility, and love.

The Shepherd leads rather than merely points. Whatever valley lies ahead, Christ enters it before His people. We may not understand the route, but we are not asked to trust the landscape. We are asked to trust the Shepherd.

His goodness is proved at immeasurable cost: He lays down His life for the sheep. The cross is not an accident that overtakes Him. Jesus gives Himself willingly, standing between His flock and the danger they could not survive.

Unlike the hired hand, He does not flee when the wolf comes. Trouble does not reveal the limit of His commitment; it reveals its depth. He remains when others cannot, guards what is His, and loses none entrusted to Him.

He also speaks of other sheep who must be brought into one flock. The Shepherd’s heart reaches beyond our familiar circle. Those who know His care begin to share His desire that others hear His voice and come near.

Rest under His care this week. Listen before you hurry, follow when He leads, and remember that your safety depends more upon His keeping than upon your ability to keep yourself.
