My Grace Is Sufficient

Paul prayed three times for the thorn to leave. His request was earnest, repeated, and offered by an apostle. Yet the Lord’s answer was not removal. It was a promise: “My grace is sufficient for you.”

We often interpret unanswered prayer as divine distance. Paul’s experience teaches another possibility. The Lord may be nearer than we know, giving not the escape we requested but the grace by which His power will be made visible.

Sufficient does not mean barely enough. Christ possesses an inexhaustible fullness fitted to the exact need of His people. His grace meets weakness without being diminished by it.

The promise is present tense. Grace is sufficient not only for the trials we survived or the future we hope to face bravely. It is enough for this hour, this limitation, this grief, and this unfinished struggle.

Weakness is difficult because it interrupts the story we hoped to tell about ourselves. It exposes dependence and removes the illusion of self-sufficiency. Yet that very emptiness becomes room for the strength of Christ to rest upon us.

Paul therefore learned to boast in weakness—not because pain became good in itself, but because weakness could no longer keep him from usefulness or joy. What appeared to disqualify him became the place where Christ’s power was most clearly displayed.

We need not romanticize suffering or stop asking for relief. Paul prayed plainly, and so may we. But when the thorn remains, we may listen for the Savior’s stronger word and trust that His grace has not failed.

You may not have the strength today for every imagined tomorrow. You are not asked to. Receive the grace Christ gives for the life actually before you. His power is made perfect precisely where yours comes to an end.
