Week 46
Run with Endurance
Hebrews 12:1–3
“Let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, looking unto Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith.”
Hebrews 12:1–3 (NKJV)
The Christian life is a race, but not a frantic competition against other believers. It is the appointed course of faithful allegiance to Christ, traveled together toward the joy He has promised.
The witnesses of Hebrews 11 surround us not merely as spectators but as testimonies: God has sustained His people through impossible roads before, and His faithfulness has not changed.
Every runner lays aside weight. Some things are plainly sinful; others are permissible yet costly to spiritual attentiveness. Wisdom asks not only, “May I carry this?” but, “Will it help me run?”
The sin that entangles must be named honestly. Shame tells us to hide after stumbling, but the gospel tells us to bring sin into the light, receive cleansing, and return to the course.
Endurance is required because the race is long. Early enthusiasm cannot substitute for habits of prayer, Scripture, worship, repentance, and fellowship that keep turning the heart toward Christ.
The central instruction is not to study ourselves but to look to Jesus. He begins faith, perfects faith, endured the cross, despised its shame, and now sits in victory.
When weariness settles into the soul, consider Him. The Savior knows hostility, loneliness, pain, and costly obedience from within. His endurance is both our pattern and our strength.
Run the portion set before you this week. Release one needless weight, refuse one familiar entanglement, and lift your eyes again to Jesus.
A Voice from Charles Spurgeon
“We must run with patience along the appointed course.”
Spurgeon emphasizes both movement and submission. We run energetically, yet we receive the course God has actually appointed instead of envying another runner’s path.
Endurance grows as attention moves away from comparison and settles upon Christ.
A Prayer
Lord Jesus,
Lord Jesus, author and finisher of my faith, fix my wandering eyes upon You.
Show me the weight I should release and the sin I must bring into Your light. Renew me where zeal has faded and strengthen the habits that keep me near.
Give me grace for the course appointed today, and carry me faithfully to its end. Amen.
Spend This Week with Christ
There is no hurry.
Return often to Hebrews 12:1–3. Read it slowly, in the morning and again before sleep. Carry its words into the ordinary places of your week.
The purpose is not merely to finish the reading, but to behold Christ more clearly and walk with Him more closely.
